Well now, just when you though that watching 3D TV may be less like Avatar at the cinema and more like staring into a box with a bit of depth perspective, along comes LG at the SID 2010 convention in Seattle, WA, with a “world’s largest” 84-inch mammoth 3DTV (press release)….yup, that’s a good old SEVEN FEET of screen goodness…. not far off what a home cinema setup with project and screen usually comes up with.
Impressive? Sure… but what’s more impressive is the resolution, which clocks in at UHD (ultra high definition) of 3840 X 2160 pixels which is four times the resolution of previous “full HD” TV panels at 1920 X 1080.
Now THAT’S something I want to see… in my home… from the sofa!
Don’t forget to enter the competition to win a 3DTV and 3D Blu Ray package from LG. It won’t be 84-inches though!

In the last post we mentioned that Sky are launching their Sky 3D channel on April 3rd with the Manchester United v Chelsea Premier League potential title-race decider.
To mark the event, LG are running a competition where the winners will get to see the footie in 3D as a VIP guest in London. They say…
The two winners will receive 5 tickets each guaranteeing them and 4 friends entry to a pub in London that will be screening the Premier League clash between Manchester United and Chelsea, in what could well be the title deciding game of the season. The match is to be the first of 7 Premier League matches to be broadcast in 3D by Sky before the end of the season, as part of an initiative with LG to bring 3D to consumers ahead of the upcoming summer of sport.
There’s even “up to $50 per party member for food and drink” thrown in!
For the full rules, check out the LG blog post, but hurry, entries have to be in by Thursday!

Following up their earlier announcement of their Infinia LX9900 LED 3DTV (47in and 55in screens), LG has announced a Blu-Ray 3D player… the BX580, pictured. With Sony introducing their 3DTV’s from June, it seems that LG’s 3D releases are slated for May. Although, neither are the first to the shops because Samsung are rolling theirs out this month, and Panasonic’s Viera 3DTV’s have already gone on sale in the USA at Best Buy. Here in Blighty, we’re still waiting for the first 3DTV’s to appear in shops or online.
New, more detailed specs on the Infinia LX9900 and BX580 are below… note the “glasses sold separately”. With people concerned at the price of 3D glasses, it may make sense to throw in a pair or two with the TV. From what I can tell, Panasonic and Sony 3DTV’s come with one pair of 3D glasses and Samsung 3DTV’s (when bought with their Blu Ray 3D player) come with a “free 3D kit for a limited time” which includes two pairs of 3D glasses and Blu Ray 3D Monsters vs Aliens.
Speaking of prices, this is hot off the LG UK blog press… “the 47 inch Infinia LX9900 will be priced around the £2500-£3000 mark, whilst the 55 inch will come in around £3600-£4000“.

LG have just announced their first 3DTV to use the active shutter 3D glasses. Unlike the LG LD920 which was used for the first live 3DTV broadcast of a sporting event to a public audience by Sky’s 3D channel back at the end of January, the LX9900 will join the consensus behind the actively powered 3D glasses which are being used by Samsung, Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba, Philips, Nvidia and pretty much everyone else who wants to put 3D hardware into your living room.
Why Active 3D Glasses?

So what happened to LG’s LD920, which used passive glasses like those you use in the cinema?
Well, thanks to Joe at the LG blog, we recently learned that the LD920 was only ever intended as a display to showcase 3D content in pubs and clubs. The reason is that the passive system has a resolution limit of 1080i (interlaced image) whereas the active shutter glasses permit the use of 1080p (progressive image) which means that each eye gets a full HD image. Sky will be broadcasting 3D at 1080i/50, so it doesn’t make any different for their content but it does make a difference for images from Blu-Ray 3D which will likely use the full 3D HD at 1080p.
For home users, LCD active shutter 3d glasses at roughly £100 per pair will be required by each person viewing the 3D content. So here’s a tip… some manufacturers are including two sets of glasses with their TV’s (eg Panasonic Viera), some are including one set (eg Sony Bravia) and some are including none (eg Samsung)… that’s equivalent to a difference in price of £200 per TV which is something to bear in mind!
