If you like Super Stardust HD, and have a 3DTV, you’re in for a pleasant surprise. According to posts at the AVForums, the game is already available in 3D from the Playstation Network. Here are some quotes from the forum thread by people who have experienced the game in 3D…
Well colour me corrected…
Super Stardust HD is already ‘proper’ 3D – and it looks GORGEOUS!
I start up the full game and it tells my TV (via amp) that it’s a 3D game and the TV asks me to turn my 3D glasses on (none of this pressing the 3D button).
I quite liked this game as an early PS3 release, and now it looks incredible. More just a sense of depth than anything, but some explosions really come out of the screen and feel as though the pixels are coming right for ya.
I can’t wait for the patch for Wipeout HD!!
… and…
3D works automatically as described.
And it looks err…. WOW!
… and…
Thankyou, it works and it’s superb! Definitely should make people realise 3D is here to stay,
Roll on the other updates!
… also…
I’m not a big gamer, but the 3D effect is simply stunning with all sorts of stuff flying out of the screen and hitting your between the eyes! It’s really quite brilliant.
A friend of mine who was very sceptical about the whole 3D thing came over and had a look. After he’d stopped “whooping” with excitement he stated that it was 100 x better than he imagined it would be. Praise indeed.
So, as we always predicted here at 3dtvreviewer, it could well be games that are the “killer app” for 3DTV and drive its adoption. Sony’s version 3.3 firmware update for the PS3 back in April laid the groundwork for 3D games which were announced for June 10th (Wipeout HD, MotorStorm Pacific Rift, Super Stardust HD and PAIN). Judging from the comments above, Super Stardust HD seems to already be available in 3D and getting rave reviews! The four games will also be available to anyone who buys a 3D Bravia TV.

As the 3D revolution gathers pace and the 3DTV’s are nearer to hitting the shops, Sony has pinned a date on its masterplan. The 3DTV maker said in a press release that the 3D “software” update to its PS3 was slated for “around June”, in time for the worldwide launch of Sony’s 3DTV’s.
It was already known that Sony would be hitting the 3D market from various angles. It had announced its Bravia 3DTV (KDL-60LX903 and others), a firmware update to the PS3 so that it could handle 3D games and Blu Ray 3D, standalone 3D Blu Ray players (BDP-S470, BDP-S470, BDP-S370, BDP-S770) and home cinema bundles which would play movies, including those from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment (Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 3D).
With that train rolling, Sony hopes to break away from the deadlock with LG as the second-largest flat TV manufacturer to challenge Samsung for dominance. I’ve always thought that games would be a huge selling point for 3DTV’s, so Sony may well see significant benefit from the PS3 being able to play 3D games and Blu Ray 3D discs.

From the “unsubstantiated rumours” department, the as yet unconfirmed game, Killzone 3 by Dutch developer, Guerrilla Games (owned by Sony Computer Entertainment) is rumoured to possibly be a 3D title, (which requires a Playstation3 console firmware update scheduled for later this year and a 3D TV to benefit from the 3D experience). The gossip also says that the game could make use of the Sony Motion Device, rumoured to be called an “Arc”, which, naturally, isn’t available yet.
Did I throw enough caveats in there?

It wouldn’t be a surprise if Sony pinned some of their 3D ambitions on their exclusive Killzone series. The current game, Killzone 2, sold over a million copies worldwide, and it’s clear that 3D games will be a big driver of 3D adoption, with gamers craving greater immersion in games… more than TV-watchers want to see Anne Robinsion in 3D!
Stay tuned as these rumours evolve into fact or disappear into nothingness… by Christmas 2010.

Now that 3DTV’s are becoming available, we’re not limited to 3D gaming using Nvidia’s 3D Vision solution and a PC monitor because PS3′s and XBox360′s can be connected to 3DTV’s, so perhaps it’s time to look again at Avatar The Game from Ubisoft, which can be played in 3D on PS3, XBox and Windows-DVD.
Regarding the game, Amazon say…
Immerse yourself in James Cameron’s world. – Peer deep into the heart of Pandora and see James Cameron’s universe, from your own perspective.

Drive all of the vehicles and ride the animals. Expand the battleground in online multiplayer. Develop your character and acquire new skills – Create your very own character and acquire skills as you progress through the game.
Regarding the tech specs, Ubisoft say…
1. Do I need to buy a special version of the game in order to play in 3D?
Absolutely not! Any Avatar: The Game DVD or Blu-Ray is capable of displaying the game on either traditional or 3D-enabled screens. Toggling between traditional and stereoscopic 3D is performed through the Options Screen accessed directly from the Main Menu.
2. Do I need a special TV or computer monitor to play the game in 3D?
Yes. Avatar: The Game has the option of outputting in most standard stereoscopic 3D formats, but a TV or monitor that is “3D-enabled” is necessary to decode and display the game in stereoscopic 3D.
3. What stereoscopic 3D signal formats is the game compatible with?
Avatar: The Game is able to output most 3D signal formats from your Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, including: RealD, Sensio, side-by-side, line-interlaced, and full checkerboard. On the PC version, Avatar: The Game supports all of the previous formats plus the NVIDIA® 3D Vision™, iZ3D and dual head formats.
4. What type of 3D glasses do I need to play the game in 3D?
Since the type of glasses needed to view content in stereoscopic 3D changes depending on the television or computer monitor being used, make sure to check with your hardware manufacturer to determine the right set of glasses to match the TV or monitor you have at home. This is also the reason why 3D glasses are not being bundled with any version of the game.
5. Does my Xbox 360 have to be equipped with an HDMI output in order to play in stereoscopic 3D?
Not necessarily. Displaying the game in stereoscopic 3D depends mostly on the input requirements of your television or computer monitor (hardware). That being said, most of the 3D-enabled televisions tested during production required the use of an HDMI input in order to display any content in stereoscopic 3D.
6. What 3D-enabled TVs are currently on the market? …and are they compatible?
Although we are unable to provide an exhaustive list of all 3D-enabled television hardware that are compatible with the game, here is a sample list of 3D-enabled TVs that can display the game in stereoscopic 3D:

At CES 2010, Sony has revealed more about its PS3 firmware upgrade to 3D stereoscopic capability.
The first Sony Bravia 3D TV’s will appear in the “summertime” and it sounds like Sony can upgrade the PS3 to stereoscopic 3D via a firmware update. The 3D televisions will be HDMI 1.4 enabled systems and the PS3, after the firmware update, will be 1.4 capable too. Presumably the TV’s will be 120Hz, and each alternating image will be 60Hz, to build a 3-D image. The firmware update will presumably apply to both PS3 games and movies on Blu Ray discs.
