Is anyone else just a tad suspicious of claims that you can “upscale” 2D content to 3D?

How does that work? 3D content has to be filmed using two cameras slightly spaced apart from each other to obtain the perspective of two eyes. So how can it be possible to “upscale” 2D content into a 3D image?
