Upscaling 2D to 3D

Is anyone else just a tad suspicious of claims that you can “upscale” 2D content to 3D?

How does that work? 3D content has to be filmed using two cameras slightly spaced apart from each other to obtain the perspective of two eyes. So how can it be possible to “upscale” 2D content into a 3D image?

Well, Toshiba think it is. They’ve just unveiled their “Cell TV” which they claim upscales 2D content to 3D. Read the report at Which.
